What Is Coaching?

Coaching is a powerful process designed to help clients get from where they currently are to where they would prefer to be. The current state is typically undesirable. Clients know they want to be somewhere else in order to feel fulfilled, happier, or more successful, but they haven’t been able to move towards their goals on their own.

Simply put, coaching helps people get through and to the other side of any personal transition, whether in life or at work. A coach actively engages clients in the process of self-understanding and supports them in solving problems which are interfering with personal happiness and the achievement of goals.

As a future-oriented modality, coaching moves clients toward their goals in an efficient and productive manner. Through regular meetings and “homework assignments” between sessions, the coach and client work as a team to:

How Is Coaching Different From Counseling?

Counseling can be compared to archeology. A counselor is helping you look back, “digging” to see how you got here and where you are wounded. The counselor works with you to bring understanding and healing from your past as you grasp and deal with your present.

Coaching can be compared to architecture. You are in the place in your life where you are ready to move forward. A coach will draw from your wisdom and insight to begin drafting the “blueprints” for your future. We will work together to process issues, tap into your dreams and passions, set goals, gain momentum when you feel stuck, and create the framework for the design of your life.

Disclaimer

Life coaching is not a substitute for mental health counseling. If you or a loved one have a diagnosis of a mental health issue, a life coach should not be the first step. It is best to have a mental health provider like a psychiatrist, psychologist, or trained mental health counselor help with diagnosis, treatment, and counseling.

The Headaches of Parenting

Have you ever been close to wanting to quit your parenting job and just walk away? Have you secretly wished there was a magic wand to either turn your kids into pumpkins or transport you to some kid-free island?

Your household sometimes feels like a war zone and no matter what parenting technique you use, you don’t seem to be able to get things under control. You are mentally and physically exhausted.

Maybe you’ve read all the parenting books you could find and still feel like nothing is changing. You see that what you are doing isn’t working, but you don’t know what else to do. You feel very lonely and you often feel like a failure. How hard can this job be?

Since you have had children, you’ve become this new person you didn’t even know existed, and you don’t like her very much. Your emotions toggle between stress, anger, worry, and guilt. You feel defeated, at a loss, hopeless, and very discouraged.

Parenting is the most rewarding, challenging, meaningful, and influential job in the world. And though most of us try to do our very best, powerful emotions can be triggered that affect our interactions with our kids and our partner.

I will work with you to learn, practice, and implement effective communication skills that will benefit your entire family and help create a positive and nurturing atmosphere. Not only will you be building healthy relationships with your kids, but you will also model positive behaviors that your children will internalize and use as they grow up.

These moments are clues that you might need a parenting coach!

Solution and Results

With parent coaching, you will better understand your children’s behaviors, acquire the tools to help you handle them more effectively, and learn the skills to raise good citizens of tomorrow. Through the parent coaching process, you will feel heard, understood, and supported while reaching a state of peaceful and hopeful parenting.

Challenge Coaching

March 15, 2018

Sometimes, life throws us something which we haven’t dealt with before and don’t know how to tackle. Sometimes, they are just too big to be dealt with by ourselves. Sometimes, it’s just “too-many-too-fast” and we feel overwhelmed and unable to cope anymore. Whatever the case may be, we are left feeling lost or stuck (or both!) and definitely very discouraged. We might even feel like we are drowning and ready to give up.

Solution

In coaching, we work together to tackle your challenges, get you unstuck, and start moving you again in the direction of a better life toward your goals or even your dreams! Together, we find your values and your strengths and we tap into them to develop your courage. We transform your life challenges into personal growth and success whatever that might mean to you.

Results

How Does Coaching Work?

March 15, 2018

The coaching process is designed to support you while you find clarity and achieve your goals. This journey requires a strong commitment to your part. The stronger the commitment, the greater the rewards.

This is how the coaching process typically works. Please note that this is just a generalization. Each coaching client designs their very own coaching process tailored to them:

  • You meet with your coach an average of three or four times per month, usually for a duration of 45–60 minutes. (Some clients may need one session to get them motivated.)
  • These meetings can take place over the phone, in person, or via Skype.
  • You leave these meetings with greater clarity about who you are, where you are going, and how to get there.
  • You may also leave the conversation with “coaching homework,” which has been mutually agreed upon. This is where the power and the efficiency of coaching come into play. By having specific tasks or practices to accomplish between sessions for which there is some real accountability, you make significant and tangible progress toward your goals.

It’s important to note that in coaching, you are in the “driver’s seat.” We collaborate every step of the way, but you remain in charge when it comes to designing the coaching process, which will work best for you. It’s important that you tailor the coaching to best suit your style, your needs, and your goals.

Why Work With a Coach?

March 15, 2018

Something is not working in your life. You might be hurting and overwhelmed. You might be stuck and confused. Maybe you are asking yourself questions like: “What has become of me? Where am I going? Why can’t things be easy the way they used to? I feel so stuck; there has to be a better way."

You’re right! There is a better way. Things should definitely be less painful and things should certainly be easier than they are. This is not the way life is meant to be! Life is too short for “this” to continue.

Unfortunately, many essential life skills such as self-care, stress management, communication, managing relationships, or parenting are not taught in school. Yet, these skills are fundamental to leading a healthy balanced life and being emotionally resilient.

So, without having learned those skills, why would you know how to get through a difficult life transition? How would you know how to communicate with your spouse, children, or co-workers in a productive manner? How can you better understand yourself, feel courageous, and lead a productive life?

If you answer YES to any of these questions:

  • Are you having trouble making a huge life-changing decision?
  • Did life just throw you a curve ball, or did you just go through a major life transition, and are you left gasping for air and wondering how you are going to pick up the pieces?
  • Do you sometimes feel overly critical of yourself or others?
  • Would you like to go through life with more self-knowledge, self-confidence, and courage?
  • Would you like to simply be happier and live a more fulfilling and whole life?

Or NO to any of these:

  • Do you like your life?
  • Do you like yourself? Do you even really know yourself?
  • Are you in harmony?
  • Are you at peace?
  • Do you feel satisfied with most aspects of your life (i.e., relationships, parenting, work/career, finances, environment, etc.)?

...you have answered the question “why work with a coach?”! So, how do you get from where you are right now to where you want to be? With coaching, you will:

  • Become fully aware and clear about who you really are, leading to a sense of wholeness

  • Be more fully self-accepting, giving you a sense of inner peace and well-being, which allows you to focus on contributing to the world around you

  • Be living the life you really want and love, making you feel like you are in flow: vibrant and alive

  • Be a courageous human being, realizing that you have choices and having confidence in your abilities. From this place of courage, you will be able to tackle challenges head-on and grow from them versus letting them define and rule you

  • Be in harmony and in flow with yourself, your life, and others

  • Have a strong sense that you “fit in” and belong, allowing you to live life fully and passionately

These transformations happen as your coach fulfills different roles: sometimes a sports coach who pushes you beyond your own limits; sometimes your personal cheerleader who encourages you like you have never been encouraged before; sometimes even a midwife who helps give birth to a new you; and always a catalyst with whom you co-create the changes you are yearning for.

People choose to work with a life coach for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the reasons you might be ready for a coach:

  • Mindset and negative thought patterns
  • Leadership & business skills
  • Character development
  • Overcoming obstacles
  • Setting healthy boundaries
  • Confidence & self-worth
  • Purpose, passion, and priorities
  • Building your faith/spirituality
